Cleaning and Repairing Canvas Roof and Plastic Rear Window

See Shawn Fogg's excellent write up how to Repair the Seam around the Rear Window- but use Clear not Black Silicone glue.

16 Oct 2007 [z3rides] Z Rag Top pulling out of the Rear Window Gasket
=Tekwizrd= 2002 BMW Z3 Topaz Blue writes:
I actually ended up using "Clear" GE Silicone II. It is a high quality, flexible, mildew resistant silicone. I had the entire top portion to fix on my Z and it only took about 5 minutes to complete. I didn't get so elaborate with masking anything off, just cut the silicone tip so that I got a reasonably small bead from it. Lifted the Rag top out of the way the entire length, laid the caulk and pushed the Rag top back under the rubber window gasket with a small screwdriver. Looks great!

Rear Window Before: Hazy, marked with stuff, bad crease- you can barely see the interior

Rear Window After: Very clear, crease reduced.
I can't remember if we used Meguiar's or the BMW rear window cleaner

Beige Roofs really have a much tougher time than Black Roofs. Black marks don't show on a black roof. (Beige roofs also have to make sure their washer fluid is not blue or else it can stain the roof.)

This gunk dripped onto my car in the city garage where I park and wouldn't come off in the winter car washing. Finally I got it off with summer car washing and some elbow grease. I was lucky it didn't stain.

Same mystery gunk I believe (the crime lab was not available) on the roof- and again, I was lucky, it came out pretty easily with a proper wash.

I use Zaino for the paint, Meguiars or BMW cleaner for the plastic window, but check out the Favorite Products page for some other products people like to use for various advantages.
